Recently, the parents of a 2 year old girl came to us with some problems. Their daughter was being treated for a specific type of cancer. One of the medications was an injectable drug, while another was an oral liquid, both which were required to be administered daily.

The injectable drug was commercially available in a dosage which was greater than the amount required for each daily injection. The remaining portion of the drug in the vial was no longer usable, hence the girl’s parents were required to purchase far more of the drug than they were able to use. By using our sterile environment laboratory facilities, we were able to “pre-load” each syringe with the specific daily amount of the drug required for each injection, thus allowing the parents to purchase only the amount of drug required. This resulted in a significant cost savings for the parents.

The oral liquid medication was extremely distasteful to the daughter. She frequently vomited the daily dosage, and understandably, administering this daily medication was less than a pleasant experience for all involved. We provided the family with an extensive list of the compounding flavors available, and the daughter picked her favorite flavor. We were able to compound the same medication in a flavor which the daughter liked, and now, taking this daily oral medication is a more pleasurable experience.
